I’ve come to learn to love my breakfasts, but since I just can’t eat anything right after getting up (I need a good hour at least to get my system going), having breakfast out of the house, or simply scheduling morning meetings over a good breakfast have lately become a part of every work week. I remember the time when I struggled to find good breakfast places, but lately I’ve discovered a few great places, that also open early enough and offer a tasty morning (and have great coffee. Here’s my favourites:
Levain
Punavuori
The new gem of the area, with high-quality baked goods from the own bakery in the back, lovely arrangement, friendly service, a wide variety of breakfast options with something for everyone. Fantastic coffee and super cozy atmosphere adds to the package. My favourite was the waffle for sure! A bit pricey, which makes it more of a special day breakfast and not necessarily something for a spontaneous everyday-breakfast, but worth every cent!
Address: Kankurinkatu 6 & Runeberginkatu 29
Opens at 8 (9 on Saturdays, Closed Sundays)
Early Bird
Kallio
Homey vibes, an extraordinary breakfast plate (that grilled cheese with the egg dip, and the sausage also!) and delicious coffee. The place really lives off the atmosphere which is the true “neighbourhood” feel that makes you feel comfortable instantly and adds to the sense of community in the area. I love how this is probably the most down-to-earth place of all of these. My only complaint: the name is misleading as they open only at 9. Now bring me more of that grilled cheese.
Address: Kolmas Linja 12
Opens at 8 (later on weekends)
Brooklyn Café
Punavuori
Ah, a staple in the café scene of Helsinki and an all-time favourite of mine. What started off as a tiny cupcake- and bagel place is now one of the best breakfast places in the neighbourhood. Brooklyn café tripled in size over the years but hasn’t lost any of the cozy charm over it, but had the opportunity to extend their offer as well, including a delicious breakfast set that includes a bagel and coffee of your choice, a smoothie and yoghurt. 14€ for that is a bit steep but you won’t regret it.
Address: Fredrikinkatu 19
Opens at 7:30 (later on weekends)
Cargo
Ruoholahti
Always a safe bet, for coffee, atmosphere and breakfast, Cargo serves delicious vegetarian breakfasts, including the tasty omelett or the avocado and cheese sandwich, variations of porridge (my favourite is the berry one!) not to mention their amazing oat-cappuccinos. Loving the big windows and vibes in here.
Address: Ruoholahdenranta 8
Opens at 7:30 (9 on weekends)
Ipi Kulmakuppila
Kallio
Clean and Nordic vibes make this place on the list, white, bright surfaces, I love the high gallery and the views down, tons of plants and of course, the breakfast. You can choose between porridge or yoghurt or go for a sandwich instead, good coffee here is a must. There’s an actual laptop ban during lunchtime, but for breakfast meet-ups it’s nothing short of perfect.
Address: Porthaninkatu 13
Opens at 8 (10 on Saturdays, Sundays closed)
Kuuma
Kluuvi
This area seems to be the hotspot for the breakfast spots! Kuuma was one of the first places to bring up a proper, pretty breakfast. Treat yourself to smoothie bowls, avocado toast and delicious coffee – all that in Nordic and bright, yet cozy atmosphere – the perfect way to start your morning. (Photo by Hanna Kärppä)
Address:Kämp Garden, 2 floor, Pohjoisesplanadi 33
Opens at 8:00 (10:00 on Saturday, Closed Sun-Mon)
Story
Kamppi
Ah the views from the 5th floor of Kamppi are just amazing, and so are their breakfast options. Not too many places offer egg variations like they do here, the eggs benedict are grrrreat and so is the avocado toast and their juices. Story also has their original spot in the old market hall but for meetings in the centre this is much calmer and easier to get to.
Address: Kamppi Mall, Urho Kekkosenkatu 1 (5th floor)
Opens at 8, 11 on Sundays
Honourable mentions:
Sis. Deli – City Centre – Kalevankatu 4 (opens at 7, 9 on weekends)
Café Cardemumma – Kallio – Kaarlenkatu 15 (opens 7:30, 9 on Saturdays, Sundays closed)
