A week ago we lost Misu.

It’s a long and complicated story, but here’s a short summary. She had lost weight and had bowel issues, and after several vet visits she got diagnosed with cancer and various things that she had in her belly. The first vet gave her only weeks to live. We were devastated.

Another vet some days later was more hopeful, and some more tests would be performed to be able to get a more specific diagnosis and treatment plan. At this point, she was a bit weakened but still her silly self.

Unfortunately, things turned around dramatically just two days after. There must have been internal bleeding, which caused her to go into acute anemic shock. She was taken to the ER, and was given a blood transfusion but there was no coming back from this. Any attempt to extend her life would have been just prolonging what was inevitable.

Seeing her suffer and being totally out of it was heartbreaking. Making the decision to euthanise in a clinical setting was awful, and not how we wanted to say goodbye. But it was the right thing to do.

Today is World Mental Health Day and while this last week was mostly tears and mentally exhausting, it also just reminded me that Misu was one of the main contributors to my mental health since we got her. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I would put my face in her fur and her purrs would calm me down. Seeing her thrive with us was wonderful to witness and I’m so happy that we got to be part of her becoming the curious cat with the strongest personality.

My very belated birthday dinner (my birthday is in

My very belated birthday dinner (my birthday is in April, but I was sick and then life happened 🤷‍♀️) took us to the new @ravintolalaivakoira in Tehtaankatu and oh it was such an excellent evening all around! For any special occasion, or just if you’re feeling like an excellent meal, I couldn’t recommend it more.

The menu is perfection, I agree with the staff recommendation to absolutely not skip their signature dish, the shrimp eclair, but also the tomato course with currants and that focaccia, and the mushroom pasta were out of this world (honestly I could have just had those Agnolotti all evening).

We also got recommended some really interesting wines - thanks again to our lovely server, she was such a delight! But that espresso martini was also the perfect ending to that.

Vibes are cozy, laidback but absolutely matching the elevated dishes. Can’t wait to see what else is coming from the team, this will certainly be a place to return to. ✨

Last weekend, my dear friend @evaurora went on a little day trip to Kivisaari (@visitkivisaari). The island has only been open for the public since this summer, and it’s been on my list since then. The day felt like the last day of summer and the first day of autumn at the same time and it was just the little nature escape and seaside break I deeply needed.

✨Here’s all you need to know:

⛴️ there are boat transfers by @frsfinland - leaving from Vuosaari, Kalasatama and Laajasalo (depending on weather). From Vuosaari is takes about 30 minutes to get there. The last chance to visit here this season is the coming weekend 28.-29.9.24 ‼️

🌲 beautiful forests, almost tropical looking waters and a little nature trail make Kivisaari a really easy little trip

🥘 the island restaurant has a lovely but simple menu with mostly seafood like the blue mussels I had, and salmon soup. Definitely plan to have lunch there when you visit!

🛌 you can stay at the main house! For a super unique archipelago accommodation, this is the spot. I’m looking at next year already 👀

🧖‍♀️ no Finnish island without sauna. You can book the sauna that also has a really picturesque swimming pier

📖 the island has an interesting history: the Merilinna main house was designed by Eliel Saarinen (who also designed the Helsinki central railway station) in 1918. Before it was now made open for everyone, it was run by the church. You can still see an altar tucked away in a small forest chapel

This was one of my favourite Slow Sundays at Kolmiomökki so I still wanted to share this, a month later! To be honest, picking blueberries is more enjoyable for me than making the jam, but with that lake view it’s pretty great. And the outcome is great, my favourite thing is to gift friends and family homemade blueberry jam from here!

I use a ratio of 1-3 (1 part sugar, 3 parts berries) 🫐🫐🫐

🍸FRIDAY COCKTAIL - KATAJANMARJA GIN FIZZ

I’m always on the lookout for foresty cocktail ingredients so when I found a juniper berry syrup recently I wanted to see what I could do with that around a Friday cocktail. Meet the Juniper berry gin fizz!

Juniper and gin might not be the most radical combination 😃 but in case you haven’t tried this birch sap and mint soda, this is your sign to change that!

✨Recipe (you can easily tweak that to your own preferences)

10ml juniper berry syrup
40ml gin (I used @kalevaladistillery)
80ml or so Birch sap and mint soda (@olvi_oyj)
A bunch of mint leaves (dried or fresh)

Glasses: I used the Forest by Tapio Wirkkala glass for the gin version, the Mocktail one is Nanny Stills Grappo line.

Did you know that you can stay in a tiny cabin where you can feed the reindeer straight from your bed?

And it’s just over in Nuuksio Nationalpark in Espoo, a short drive from Helsinki and reachable by public transport.

It’s no secret that I absolute love the reindeer and their fluffy noses, and their presence gives me so much peace and happiness.

The Iglu hut stay was definitely a highlight for me when we got invited to stay here some years ago already at this point - @nuuksioreindeerpark is one of my favourite places! Especially beautiful when the autumn colours are coming, and there’s still availability! Check my stories today for a link to book 🍁🍂

I got a SUP board this summer and when I saw #Kolmiomökki from the water for the first time, it was a perspective I somehow didn’t expect! It stands so beautifully on top of the cliff, nestled in the forest. There weren’t many spots where it was actually visible from the lake. My happy place 🤍

☕️🌲SLOW SUNDAYS - Morning sauna at #kolmiomökki

Not much that I love more to get the day started is a morning sauna at the cabin. Our sauna was built already in 1969 and it was the first building the previous owners put here.

I make coffee, and then head down to the lake to start the sauna and enjoy a quiet morning by the water while I wait for the sauna to heat up. This peaceful, calm moment is just ✨

A dip in the lake and then into the sauna - perfection.
