Since the cabin has become my entire personality, of course my main mission for the Food fair at @messukeskus next week (19.-21.4.24) is to get inspired for all the things to make this season. We’re fully equipped with a charcoal grill, a pizza oven, a smoker, and a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove, so the possibilities are endless.

I’ve always enjoyed the food fair to taste my way through all the things and pick up some delicious things for the season ahead!

Since we bought our cabin, I had a great excuse to go wild in the secondhand stores and raid the flea markets, which means I have been collecting and accumulating quite a bit of, well, stuff (why so many chairs?!). Especially now over the winter months, when we couldn’t go because there’s too much snow and it’s still too cold - and of course so many ongoing renovation plans and projects.

Now that it’s still going to be a while before we can take all these things and spring is going to be busy, I had to do something about all the clutter, especially in my office/guest room in the apartment.

Cityvarasto has been the perfect solution: they have so many locations conveniently located all around Finland, you can rent them short- or long-term, and it’s a great option for you if you need to get rid of some stuff while you do some renovation work, while you’re running out of space or while you’re moving.

I can’t wait to get organising at #kolmiomökki but until then I’m glad there’s a safe spot for all my treasures 😌

Dinner at @basbasofficial last night was such a treat, delicious natural wines, I’m still dreaming of the Savoy cabbage and the serving of the green salad side dish was an amount I’d like to see more often. If you score a table here, you can consider yourself lucky! It’s been many years since my first visit to this gem of a restaurant and hopefully it won’t be as long until the next time!

This was by far the most intense renovation weeken

This was by far the most intense renovation weekend so far and also the biggest transformation for the time being. Kolmiomökki was painted in the most aggressive red everywhere, and over the Easter weekend it finally happened: the red is gone. I can’t believe it, after almost a year, it’s DONE. Check my stories to see the current status!

A lot more ahead of us. The floor probably also needs the update sooner than planned but let’s see. For the moment I’m enjoying the non-red and the forest. I took this picture before we started heading back to the city, just sitting there looking at this beautiful mökki in happiness, while listening to birdsong and the wind in the trees.

Oho, a bunch of new people here, hello welcome! 🤗

So here’s a little introduction:
🇱🇺 from Luxembourg originally, I came to Helsinki for an exchange year in 2010 (yes, voluntarily), and have been living and loving it here since. I’m a winter soul, I hate the heat, so it makes sense that I ended up in the Nordics 🤷‍♀️

🗓️Since 2014 I’ve been self-employed, nowadays I work mainly as an independent producer - for TV, magazines, and my own channels like here on Instagram or my website www.kathrindeter.com. I’m also an official host for @myhelsinki, where I get to share my love for my chosen home with their guests.

🇫🇮On this account I want to inspire people to discover local culture and destinations to build their own home here - through experiencing travel in Finland, food and the great outdoors, local architecture and design, and whatever other things that make me happy.

🏡About a year ago, my partner of almost 10 years and I bought a gorgeous lakeside A-frame cabin in the woods after years of searching. It’s originally from the 70s, we definitely want to honour the charm of the era, but there are a lot of renovations coming our way. And I cannnnnnot wait.

A random list of things about me:
☕️I collect Vintage Finnish ceramics (hand-painted Pentik especially) & glassware
🧦I might have too many sweaters & woollen socks because cozy knitwear
🐱🐱We live with two very cute older cat ladies: Misu (always a bit grumpy) & Lily (always mostly happy)
🛍️I try wearing mostly Finnish brands & shop second hand whenever I can
🥂My understanding of Finnish better than I speak it, but both get even better after bubbles
🍝Both the amount of pasta & also salad I eat is questionable but what can you do
🌭From Luxembourg I mostly bring home condiments, like sauce Andalouse (because it is superior to all sauces) & proper mustard

😶What I don’t like:
Warm whole tomatoes
Sand and beaches
Frogs, caterpillars and monkeys freak me out
Viili (what is wrong with you silly Finns) (a fermented milk product that’s super slimy)
The smell of Terva (tar, again, you silly Finnish people)
Turtleneck sweaters

8 - spontaneous movie night with my first visit to @cinemaorion for All of us Strangers was wonderful

The spring fair is this week and - not gonna lie - this is my favourite fair. It’s the place for outdoor living, gardening, cabin and lake shenanigans and much more.

I’ve been looking forward to it for many weeks. Because: this time I can really go there with a mission.

The plan is to start #kolmiomökki season during Easter, and kick off a bunch of renovations that have been brewing over the winter break.

🪟there was some unexpected frost inside the terrace door and window, so those need to be replaced sooner than later. This wasn’t supposed to be a project this early in the journey but let’s see where we go with it.

🏊 I’ve been dreaming of a swimming pier even before a mökki was in sight. The shoreline is a bit tricky to work with so I’m looking forward to getting some insights and ideas!

🌱 Garrrrrdening! The plot came with a surprise greenhouse and a bunch of neglected garden beds, and they will need some love this season. I’m looking for ideas, tips and some gear upgrades for this 🤓

🥰 My dear @innastus has been awarded Vuoden Mökkiläinen (cabin person of the year) so of course I’ll be there to cheer to her and their gorgeous @kesalahti_lodge!

It’s been a couple of not-so-great weeks, severa

It’s been a couple of not-so-great weeks, several disappointing work situations, followed by a cold accompanied by a lip infection. So to be honest, it was pretty disheartening and hard to find motivation to dig myself out of this hole these times put me in. I withdraw and lose perspective.

I know self-employment has its ups and downs and things come and go in waves, but recently the downs have been a bit overwhelming. Compensating with cabin planning related retail therapy, pretty sunsets and lots of takeout food orders did help a little bit. Not saying it’s a healthy way to cope but what are you gonna do 🤷‍♀️

Now ending the day with some red wine, silly tv shows and enjoying the fact that both cats sleep on the bed right now.
