Ghost Town of Kruunuvuori (outdated)

DISCLAIMER: This post is NOT up to date. Unfortunately, the majority of the villas and photos are from 2014, and Kruunuvuori looks very different these days, as they have been burnt down, vandalised or taken down altogether as the area is developed. I will leave the post online as it is so special and it was a great place to visit, but I don’t advise to go there anymore.

One of the best things about Helsinki (or, generally, the Scandinavian Capitals) is that it doesn’t take much time or distance to escape the rush of the city and find a nature hideaway somewhere. During Easter the weather was so amazing that it would’ve been a felony to stay inside and leaving the city for a couple of hours just seemed too inviting. Inspired by this post from Laura, I returned to Kruunuvuori – a magical site East of Helsinki where I had only been once in the winter.

The area of Kruunuvuori is a foresty area on the Laajasalo peninsula, on the south-eastern shore of Helsinki. In the 60s the city planned to create a new suburban area there, but due to weak and (I heard) swampy grounds (and other reasons) that plan was not realised. The wooden villas that had already been built there all the way from the 1800s onwards were hence abandoned but not taken down, so during the last decades those beautiful houses had been left to decay in the woods.
It feels a bit like wandering through a ghost village, especially since some of the houses still have some furniture left in them.  The sight of those beautiful wooden houses did leave me a bit sad. Thinking of the owners/former owners and the fate of the area Who lived there? Are they still alive? Do they come back during the night? As zombies!? (HALLOWEEN PARTY ALERT)

Super Party location!

The walk through the Finnish woods is so soothing and like a hug for your soul, especially the shoreline with an amazing panoramic view of Helsinki took my breath away. You can see all major landmarks of the city from there! It’s one of these spots that make me remember why I love this place and why I’m here. The water was freezing cold, but it was good enough for dipping our feet in it. Maybe for a swim in the summer then.

From the centre it takes about 45 minutes to get there, but it’s easy with the metro to Herttoniemi and bus 88 (dir. Kaitalahti) just until the final stop. From there you just keep walking ahead and following your pretty little nose.

Nice! Always love reading about that place, my favorite spot in the city. Kruunuvuori is magical, and like you said, a walk in the forest is always like a hug to your soul. Need to go back there, once again, one of these days! 🙂
