4 Things to do in Porvoo (that you wouldn’t expect, necessarily)

About a 45 minute bus ride from Helsinki lies charming little Porvoo, a popular city escape destination for the ones that seek a time-out from the buzzing city life down here in Helsinki. #nbefinland treated a bunch of international travel bloggers to 2,5 days in this pretty town and allowed us to discover it beyond the historic centre and a cup of coffee.

1. Facing your fears

I’m not overly comfortable with heights and the feeling of free fall is the worst I can imagine, but when we heard of the plan to go zip lining through the forest in Porvoo, I was super excited. The smaller versions they have of this on playground have always been a favourite of mine, but when I stood on top of the tower, hooked to the rope above me and told to “just lean forwards and fall” – my heart was beating so hard! The second you actually fall and don’t feel you’re attached to the rope above you, is absolutely terrifying – but once you slide along, so much fun! I would actually do it again. Book your ziplining adventure at Kannonnokka! Fellow travellers, the magnificent Vagabrothers, have captures my epic scream in their Porvoo Video (see below).

2. Fancy dining

  • We started off with a delicious dinner in our Bed & Breakfast Ida-Maria catered by Hanna-Maria, a traditional small restaurant that has been in the historic centre for 20 years already – oh dear, that salmon!
  • A less Finnish yet not less tasty alternative is Zum Beispiel. Locals told us they were really happy to have this place in their city – it is something different. Porvoo not being the biggest place on the planet, everyone was happy to have a restaurant that offers more internationally inspired food.
  • Bistro Sinne is a restaurant that surprised us with an amazing fine dining experience in casual atmosphere. Focussing of working with fresh and local produce, Sinnes chef really create inspired and delicious menus. They also opened a “Sinne” in Helsinki, I’ll be heading to that soon!
  • You will have to stop by Pieni Suklaatehdas, the little chocolate factory. This little shop saved our frozen fingers with an excellent hot chocolate and still brings back memories when I indulge in one of the pralines I took back home.
  • My personal highlight was the campfire dinner we were treated to at the Kannonnokka forest retreat centre. Unfortunately this experience can only be booked for a minimum of 10 people, but if you have any chance to visit that place – do it. The 28-hour-cooked-wild boar was spectacular, but especially the atmosphere in the Kota (Finnish version of a Teepee) was so nice and cozy.

  • 2. Kulinarische Erlebnisse

  • 3. Creating your own art

Taidetehdas – The Art Factory – is a former (non-art)factory, instead of tearing it down, the city of Porvoo turned it into an art centre not only giving artists studios to work, but also making it the cultural melting point for the area with space for exhibition, concerts, meetings and Bistro Sinne, that I was raving about before. We met local artist Antti Raatikainen who introduced us to the technique of acrylic transfer – you take a print of your favourite photo, paint on it and transferred onto a canvas by wetting the paper. I’m usually not the most confident creator of artsy things, but I think it actually turned out quite well! Another thing I might wanna try again.

Also das nächste, was ich gern nochmal probieren würde.

    4. Taking an actual time-out

People do not spend enough time in Porvoo – because people rarely go beyond the historic centre and the coffee shop there. Cruise visitors in particular only have one or two hours to spend, so they walk up and down the historic part of the centre and leave again. This doesn’t leave enough time to get a glimpse of Porvoos true magic. The calm, empty streets at night, the forest and Linnamäki, a taste of the aforementioned cuisine, browsing odd little stores, beautiful boutiques, take a walk on the other side of the city and a bit further out – there is more to discover in Porvoo than you might think. I can easily recommend to stay over night, or at least to spend a full day in the town. More information on what to do can be found at Visit Porvoo.

Thank you so much to my fellow travellers, the Nordic Bloggers’ Experience and the lovely ladies from Visit Porvoo for making this trip possible for us!

Oh, how lucky You were being the part of the Nordic Bloggers’ Experience!!! Congratulations for that! Nobody ever invites me nowhere. Maybe I don’t deserve being invited. Sigh!

      • Kathrin

Aww, your time will come, no worries! Keep an eye out for more cool campaigns around Finland and make sure to sign up in time 🙂

Oh thank You. I have never heard or read any campaigns around Finland. Maybe it is due to it that I very seldom visit Finnish blogs because I write in four languages and none of these languages is not Finnish.

Have a great start of new week!
