Åland really is one of the most beautiful spots I have ever seen and the perfect place to let your daily life behind you. The Getaway was just the right thing for relaxing, being outdoors, turn off your phone and stop worrying, exactly what I needed after I thought I’d lose my mind after a few very busy weeks this summer! Countless islands, magical bays, endless skies – what could you need more to let your mind reset. Apart from lounging about on the rocks behind our cottage, there are of course a few more things to do.

1. Go Berry-picking.

It’s nothing new that berries are a pretty big thing in the Nordics, but the wet and fairly mild spring and summer have made nature go totally nuts this year. Especially in Åland, I was truly amazed by the variety of wild berries everywhere around and the sheer amount! Bilberries (the Finnish black Blueberry) was just everywhere (literally), but apparently, I have a good eye for berries and also spotted wild red currants, raspberries and forest strawberries!

Åland is famous for being a cluster of ticks, so all the forest action demands caution. Wear long pants, ideally with your socks up on them, “locking up” your legs, shower yourself in tick spray. As for the rest of you, make sure you tick-check yourself carefully and get tick tweezers before you go anywhere. Denn Vorsicht ist die Mutter der Porzellankiste! Oder so.

1. Geh’ Beeren sammeln.

2. Have sauna, obviously.

Our resort about 50km from Mariehamn, Sandösund, has something unique and amazing: two floating saunas. For 20€ per hour you can enjoy pure bliss and calmness on the water. And jump right in it, straight from the sauna. The calm coastline and the view from the sauna itself onto the water, is probably something you’ll need to experience to understand why I’m so excited about this one! If you’re more a palju kinda type, you can rent the exclusive cottage that Olof built on its own little island, about a 20 minute boat ride from the main resort. This offers you absolute and total remoteness from everyone and everything, and a hot pool right by the pier.

3. Eat delicious food.

After having been to Smakbyn at the Taste of Helsinki festival, I’ve been longing to go there! I’m a die-hard foodie (I stole that term) so I’m not gonna lie that getting the chance of visiting Smakbyn was also a final criteria why I chose Ã…land for the Getaway. Summer season brings you local delicacies such as perch, new potatoes, asparagus and all kinds of root vegetables; rhubarb and berries. Famous chef Björklund has made Smakbyn one of the best restaurants of all of Ã…land with a reputation that makes people travel all the way here, just to eat (see myself). My already high expectations were pretty much exceeded, even the Vegetarian by my side was surprised by the composition and flavours of the dish. Both of us were so inspired by the meal, that we tried to recreate it only a few days later!

3. Ganz viel tolles Essen!

The archipelago regions are famous for their delicious bread, Saaristoleipä or Saaristolaisleipä, which is a dark rye and malt bread, that slightly sweetened with some syrup. Add some butter and a sprinkle of salt, and it’s pure heaven. I’ve really developed an addiction to this – I’m still on the quest to find the best one in Helsinki, as the one from Smakbyn is obviously insanely hard to beat. Or just figure out a way to get someone to make it for me. Hint. Great as a snack with some wine.

Have you tried the Åland pancake yet? I knew their pancakes were somewhat special or different, but I didn’t really put a lot of effort into investigating them more. I tried them finally! The Ã…land pancake is basically baked rice pudding, that’s typically eaten with whipped cream and plum sauce. Apparently everyone has their own secret little recipe, so I need to keep trying them all! Not to forget the beer, of course! Nowadays, Alands only local brewery Stallhagen (which has only been on since 2004!) produces small amounts (although growing) which are so far only sold in Finland and Sweden. I enjoyed the honey beer, should get that again!

4. Check out local festivals!

Lucky for us, there was a Viking festival and market on the way to our resort, that we could casually drop by for a snack and some viking culture (and a kitty!). Especially in the summertime, Åland and its islands have tons of festivities to offer, also for example the Rock off! Festival that was in Mariehamn while we were there. The Viking market is a popular event and unlike many other markets of the kind I have visited, people were actually staying there overnight! It didn’t feel like an artificial set-up, more like a genuine happy commune. The fences and booths, also the pub shack, are permanently set-up there and used for the viking market that’s usually for a few days during July. A really cool event with some really nice food, real fighting action and some very unique shopping, of course.

4. Festivals!

5. Just. Go. Out. To. Nature. And do nothing.

The Åland islands are an area of peace, quiet and purity. You don’t need much, you need whatever will make your head switch off for a bit. After our slightly difficult bike ride in the start, I really managed to let go of all that I had going on lately, although, by the time I’ve settled down and relaxed a bit, we were already headed back. So, in the end, I honestly don’t feel like I’ve seen even remotely enough of this beautiful place and I am already longing to go back.

I would have loved to keep on biking, explore the neighbouring islands by ferry, go kayaking, have more sauna, get more berries, play sad minigolf, go for more swims, go for hikes. Next time.

5. Einfach mal Nichts tun.

The Åland Islands have intrigued me ever since I was in Finland last year, sailing through them on the overnight ferry into Turku: I knew I was missing out on something!

I’ve read a bit about them since and they sound perfect!

The food you’ve described looks and reads as delicious, I really want to try the Åland pancake! All those berries just make me want to head back up to Scotland where we have wild bilberries (we call them blaeberries) in the forests. The ticks sound a bit horrific though, must remember to pack my tick socks next year, thanks for the warning!
